Home Care Human Resources Sector Study
The overall goal of the Home Care Human Resources Sector Study is to provide a comprehensive view of the short and long term human resource issues and challenges facing the home care sector and to serve as the basis for coordinated action by the sector. The study will focus on formal, informal and volunteer caregiving. Funding of this study is cost-shared between Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) and the sector.

A Steering Committee Meeting was held in Calgary from December 5-7, 2000. CAOT Director of Professional Practice, Darene Toal-Sullivan, represents CAOT on the committee. At this meeting the research team, a consortium involving Goss Gilroy Inc., the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Queen's University and Hollander Analytical Services Limited, reviewed the methodology and draft work plan. The 18-month project will begin early in 2001. Input will be sought from individual occupational therapists, provincial/territorial occupational therapy organizations, and public and private sector employers across Canada through key informant interviews, surveys, focus groups, and case studies. Your participation is critical to this study because occupational therapy is recognized as a key human resource professional in this sector. Canada E-Health 2000
CAOT was one of many stakeholders including health care practitioners, governments, researchers and non-governmental organizations, who participated in this conference hosted by Health Canada, in Ottawa, October 22-24, 2000. The Office of Health and The Information Highway (OHIH) was established in 1997, as Health Canada's focal point for all matters concerning the use of information and communications technologies in the health sector. The objectives of OHIH include providing a national leadership role in the development of the Canadian Health Infostructure. The conference provided an opportunity to raise awareness and share information related to the application of information and communications technologies in the health care sector. The conference program revolved around three themes: 1. electronic health records, 2. telehealth, and 3. public health information. For further information about OHIH initiatives visit their web site at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ohih-bsi/

Joint Statement on Smoking Cessation
For Weedless Wednesday held on January 17, 2001, CAOT joined nine other health associations to release a position statement highlighting the role health professionals can play in smoking cessation. Both the news release and the position statement are available on the CAOT web site.

Enhancing research use through on-line action research
CAOT, in partnership with the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto submitted a funding proposal to the Office of Learning Technologies (OLT), Human Resources Development Canada for a project entitled Enhancing research use through on-line action research. We have received a positive response from the OLT and the project has been recommended for funding. The goal of this project is to enable occupational therapists to develop practical methods to utilize research findings. To attain this goal, groups of occupational therapists with similar clinical interests will carry out action research projects. To overcome geographic isolation and time limitations, this project will be carried out using the Internet. For more information, visit the CAOT site.

Many thanks to Mary Egan, Claire-Jehanne Dubouloz, Helene Polatajko-Howell and Susan Rappolt for this successful proposal.

Archives Committee receivesLil Hewton Memorial Bursary
The CAOT Archives Committee was awarded the Lil Hewton Memorial Bursary by the Museum of Mental Health Services (Toronto) Inc., Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. The Archives Committee will use this $2500 bursary to achieve objectives related to the CAOT 75th anniversary activities.
Thanks to Lynn Cockburn and Barry Trentham of the Archives Committee for submitting this successful proposal.
