The Home Care Evaluation and Research Centre (HCERC) is Canada's first
multidisciplinary research agency focusing exclusively on home care. The
Centre is addressing the organization, delivery, and financing of home

National Indicators for Home
Care
The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) initiated a project
in April 1999, to develop national priority indicators for home care.
The purpose of the indicators is to support regional health authorities
in planning and evaluating their home care services. An initial draft
set of indicators was developed through review of national and international
standards, an external survey of health information needs and priorities
and consultation with an Expert Working Group. An external field review
of the proposed indicators was conducted in July 2000 to refine this initial
set of indicators. CAOT was among the external field reviewers that included
representatives from various levels of government, national organizations,
academics and researchers, health professionals and other experts in home

Health Care in Canada
The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and Statistics Canada
have released a report measuring Canadians' health and the performance
of the health care system. Health Care in Canada 2000: A First Annual
Report is aimed at decision and policy-makers, and the general public.
The report highlights three areas: the changing face of Canada's Health
Care System; including public opinion, and health care costs; The Continuum
of Care: gaps in health care services and current continuum of care research;
and Future Directions: how data collection can be improved.

Toward a Healthy Future: Second Report on the Health of Canadians, summarizes
the most current information on the nation's health. This document is
the result of a collaborative effort by the by Federal, Provincial and
Territorial Advisory Committee on Population Health, Health Canada, the
Canadian Institute for Health Information and a project team from the
Centre for Health Promotion, University of Toronto.
A population health approach was used to examine the broad determinants
of health. Part A examines the health status of Canadians; diseases and
conditions, psychological well- being, disability and activity limitations
and major causes of death. Part B emphasizes the influence of gender and
socioeconomic status on health including literacy, education, employment,
housing and income. Part C discusses priorities for action to improve
health.

Evidence-Based Practice
The Research and Development Group at the College of Occupational Therapists,
United Kingdom has published a number of documents of interest to occupational
therapy practitioners, educators and managers in promoting evidence-based
quality services. Topics include:
