Caseload Management Planning Tool

The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) partnered to develop the Interprofessional Caseload Management Tool project, funded by Health Canada. The CMPT is an innovative approach to caseload/workload management that can be applied to both individual provider and service perspectives. This evidence-informed approach matches the therapist's available time for care with the complexity and intensity of clients' treatment to forecast a model for effective and manageable workloads. The CMPT offers administrators and clinicians an opportunity to compile aggregate standardized data on service delivery. This data will provide useful information to support development of caseload guidelines for specific client groups and contribute to high quality, effective and sustainable health care for the all Canadians..

This tool is free to CAOT members. Click 'More info' below to access the page with the member link.

Cognition, Occupation, and Participation Across the Life Span:Neuroscience, Neurorehabilitation, and Models of Intervention in Occupational Therapy, 3rd Edition
Edited by Noomi Katz, PhD, OTR
Foreword by Beatriz Colon Abreu, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA

The translation of cognitive neuroscience into occupational therapy practice is a required competence that helps practitioners understand human performance and provides best practice in the profession. This comprehensive new edition represents a significant advancement in the knowledge translation of cognition and its theoretical and practical application to occupational therapy practice with children and adults. Chapters, written by leaders in an international field, focus on cognition that is essential to everyday life. Each cognitive model includes (1) a theoretical base; (2) intervention, including evaluation procedures, assessment instruments, and treatment methods; (3) individual and group treatment case studies that illustrate the intervention process; and (4) research supporting the evidence base of the model or parts of it. Chapters feature learning objectives and review questions.

This book prompts occupational therapy professionals and students to consider cognitive intervention strategies as critical to promote occupation-based, client-centered care and everyday participation in a fuller life.

Conversations with a Rattlesnake

Following the release of his mind-blowing first book, Playing with Fire, Theo Fleury joins forces with world-renowned therapist, Kim Barthel in a new book: Conversations with a Rattlesnake, coming out November 2014. The book is a raw and honest conversation, loaded with personal insights and cutting-edge information regarding healing from trauma and abuse.

Fleury calls Barthel the "Wayne Gretzky of therapy", and within their emotionally-safe relationship, he bares his soul so that others can learn from his mistakes, triumphs and new learning. Fleury's story will inspire not only those overcoming their own trauma, but friends, parents, teachers, coaches, therapists, and health practitioners-anyone who is in the critical position of supporting someone who needs to share their own story.

Co-author Kim Barthel, provides an in-depth explanation of early childhood attachment and addiction that tie into the reasoning behind our behaviours, and the science of how our brains work. Barthel explains how understanding groundbreaking scientific and psychological research can eliminate the unnecessary and damaging shame that so often accompanies abuse and trauma. Her dialogue with Fleury illuminates self-awareness, mindfulness and the power of relationships.

Fleury's life experiences and Barthel's informed interpretation combine to provide a unique look at the healing process that is easy to read, entertaining and transformational.
