It is well recognized that substance use has the potential to impact a person's occupations, including parenting, employment, school performance and self-care. It is frequently an underlying factor in hand injuries, head injuries and spinal cord injuries. Substance use may also exacerbate mental health symptoms. At the same time, substance use is a topic that is frequently not addressed in occupational therapy, which may influence the effectiveness of interventions and the outcome of goals. This presentation is designed to provide occupational therapists with an introduction to brief intrvention strategies that can be incorporated into a variety of practice settings.
