Lymphedema is a chronic medical condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich lymphatic fluid in the body that may result in a progressive edema, along with physical, psychosocial, and occupational performance issues. The diagnosis and recognized conservative treatment standards will be discussed. A review of both published research and clinical practice assessment outcomes considering occupational performance issues will be covered. The roles of occupational therapists to facilitate clients with lymphedema’s self-management in the context of daily living activities and to promote effective long-term chronic disease management will be highlighted.
