As the life expectancy and chronicity of health conditions affecting Canadians continues to rise, the assessment of autonomous decision-making capacity becomes an issue of increasing importance.  Adults with diseases and disabilities are at particular risk in this regard. A decision-making capacity assessment (DMCA) model was developed, implemented and evaluated. During this webinar, occupational therapists will gain practical information to for use when conducting DMCAs.  Case examples will highlight best-practice processes and tools that enable independent practitioners and inter-disciplinary teams to provide DMCAs that maximize client autonomy, offer least restrictive and intrusive solutions, and align with provincial legislation.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will:

  1. Distinguish appropriate triggers for capacity assessment.
  2. Document capacity concerns appropriately, to meet current legislative requirements.
  3. Describe the DMCA Model, including related assessment tools, worksheets and a framework for implementation of the model.
