Ayres Sensory Integration: Evidence and Systematic Guide (April 28, 2015)
Autism is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders affecting 1/66 children. Many persons with autism have difficulty processing and integrating sensory information affects functional skills including daily living skills, socialization and academic learning. Occupational therapists have expertise in enabling participation, and one approach that occupational therapists use is sensory integration. In fact, sensory integration is one of the most frequently requested interventions to address sensory issues and participation challenges by parent of children with autism. This webinar will provide an overview of the principles of sensory integration and their usefulness for children with autism, as well as demonstrate the use of Data Driven Decision Making (Schaaf, 2014) as a framework for addressing these participation challenges and systematically measuring their outcomes. Participants will be introduced to a clinical guidebook that can be utilized to implement these strategies in everyday practice. The information presented in this webinar is based on a randomized control trial of occupational therapy using sensory integration (Schaaf et al., 2014) published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders and funded by The Autism Speaks Foundation.
