This two-day practical workshop is intended for occupational therapists who wish to understand what cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is and begin to use CBT approaches in their occupational therapy practice. Self-reflection, lecture and hands-on practice opportunities will be utilized to assist participants in learning a framework for understanding the skills that support positive connections with clients, the foundations of CBT, the ‘5 Ws’ and how to utilize CBT in occupational therapy practice.  Audio and/or video presentations will be included to support learning. Participants will be expected to complete a short reflective task prior to the workshop and complete a homework exercise the evening of Day 1.

Day 1

  • How to promote positive engagement with clients
  • Foundations of CBT
  • Homework:  An exercise in demonstrating understanding

Day 2

  • ‘5 Ws’ of CBT
  • How to start using CBT in every day occupational therapy practice

Goals and learning objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will: 

  1. Describe a framework for understanding how to promote engagement with clients.
  2. State the ‘5 Ws’ of CBT.
  3. Begin to apply the knowledge and skills of CBT in everyday occupational therapy practice.
  4. Begin to be self-reflective with CBT skills as an option in your occupational therapy practice.

Target audience:

This workshop is intended for occupational therapists and students in occupational therapy programs who have less than 2-day workshop with 12 contact hours of previous training in CBT and who wish to start integrating CBT approach into their practice with any population.  CBT has been researched and used extensively with adolescents, adults and older adults with a variety of mental health disorders and with chronic pain. For additional information about the evidence on CBT with your client populations, you may search PubMed.

Please note: The legislations regulating the use of cognitive-behavioural therapy and psychotherapy vary between provincial and territorial jurisdictions. Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.

Gord Hirano

Gord Hirano is an occupational therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience. He is the Executive Director at the Hamilton Program for Schizophrenia and is an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) in the O.T. program at McMaster University as well as maintaining a private practice in occupational therapy. Gord holds a Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Boston University and degrees in Kinesiology and Psychology as well as Occupational Therapy. Gord has obtained the following advanced training in CBT:

  • Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
    • Core 1 - CBT for Depression and Suicidality
    • Core 2 - CBT for Anxiety
    • Core 3 - CBT for Personality Disorders and Challenging Problems
    • Teaching and Supervising CBT
    • CBT for Schizophrenia    
  • OISE Certificates in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Fundamental and Advanced skill courses
  • Psychotherapy Supervision Training Program, Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists

Gord practices as an occupational therapist and actively does CBT with adult individuals with schizophrenia, anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

Please note that for the 2017-2018 workshops, CAOT has reduced the registration fee for all registrants instead of offering a group rate. When available, CAOT offers late registration for workshops at the regular rate plus a $50 administration fee. We will only be able to accommodate if there is sufficient space.

Cancellation/refund policy:

All refund requests must be sent in writing to Requests received prior to October 31, 2018 will be given a 50% refund. CAOT will not provide a refund after the registration deadline. CAOT reserves the right to cancel or modify the offering.

CAOT reserves the right to modify the workshop title, description, registration dates and information on the workshop webpage. CAOT will notify participants on or before October 5, 2018 if there is insufficient registration by that date and reserves the right to cancel a Workshop due to insufficient registration up until October 19, 2018. CAOT reserves the right to modify the offering, interrupt Workshops, change the timing of a Workshop, cancel a Workshop or change the location of a Workshop due to the presenter no longer being able to present the Workshop, severe weather, power failure, building closures or other special circumstances that are beyond the control of CAOT by notifying participants as soon as possible. If the Workshop is cancelled by CAOT, registrants will receive a full refund of the registration fee. CAOT will not be responsible for other costs or expenses incurred by registrants as a result of any such changes.
