New perspectives in our understanding of autism spectrum disorder: A primer for occupational therapists

Register by Monday, August 19, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern time).

Presenter: Moira Pena

Occupational therapists are frequently involved in the provision of services to children and youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is therefore essential that we are well informed in the changes made to the diagnostic criteria for ASD, relevant research findings and autism trends to best inform our practice.

This webinar will provide an overview of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, prevalence, sex differences and early markers for ASD. Associated and co-occurring developmental disabilities, medical and mental health conditions, as well as new perspectives in interpreting the ‘duality’ of autism and relevant research trends will be explored.

After taking part in this webinar, you will be able to:

  1. Improve your understanding of ASD including changes made to the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5, the prevalence of co-occurring conditions, and how ASD may present differently in girls.
  2. Identify risk factors and red flags in early development that may lead to a diagnosis of ASD.
  3. Describe new ways of interpreting autism as well as latest research findings that are relevant to occupational therapy practice.
