Late workshop registration is available at the regular rate plus $50 administrative fee until April 13, 2018 or until maximum number of registrants is reached (whichever comes first)

Toronto, ON

Monday, April 23, 2018 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

This hands-on one-day workshop is intended for occupational therapists who wish to increase their capacity to select and use appropriate screening tools and interventions when working with adults who misuse substances or have a concurrent disorder. To allow more hands-on learning opportunities and to ensure that participants have a base knowledge on substance use within occupational therapy frameworks, psychoactive substances and harm reduction, participants will be asked to read Chapters 1, 3 and 4 of Licit, Illicit, Prescribed: Substance Use and Occupational Therapy (Kiepek, 2016) prior to the workshop.

Participants will receive a certificate of attendance electronically following the workshop.

Workshop topics:

  • Screening and assessment tools
  • Goal setting and intervention
  • Program planning
  • Advocacy

Goals and learning objectives:

After taking part in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Be able to select, administer and score addiction-related screening and assessment tools.
  2. Improve skills at blending occupational therapy-specific goal setting and intervention with approaches that address substance use, misuse, and addiction.
  3. Enhance skills at integrating substance use, misuse, and addiction into occupational therapy program planning and development.
  4. Improve knowledge and skills at advocating for the occupational therapy role to address substance use, misuse, and addiction.

Target audience:

The content of this workshop is designed for occupational therapists who work with adolescents, adults or seniors who misuse substances or have a concurrent disorder. Students in occupational therapy programs, occupational therapist assistants, other health professionals, probation officers, lawyers and managers who work with or are interested in working with adolescents, adults or seniors who misuse substances or have a concurrent disorder may also participate. If you do not have an occupational therapy background or you do not have experience working directly with people who misuse substances or have a concurrent disorder, please familiarize yourself with the practice settings where an occupational therapist may work with someone who misuses substances (Chapters 8-10 of the included publication) prior to attending the workshop.

Please note: Each participant is responsible to ensure they apply the information within the context of their licensure, provincial/territorial legislations, institution regulations, scope of practice, etc.
