Pelvic health and emotional wellness: Occupational therapist role with pelvic floor dysfunction (June 01, 2021)
Description

Presented by: Lara Messinger

Pelvic floor disorders can have a significant impact, not only on the physical aspect of a person, but also the mental, emotional, social, and overall well-being of an individual.  Canadian statistics have indicated 25-50% of all women will develop some degree of pelvic floor support issue, and 10% of the Canadian population are living with some form of urinary incontinence (Canadian Continence Foundation, 2020).  By nature of occupational therapy’s comprehensive approach, the profession is in a unique position to provide holistic support.

This webinar will review pelvic floor anatomy, function, and dysfunction, the impact of pelvic floor dysfunction and how occupational therapy can contribute.  Participants will learn practical strategies that they may use with clients immediately following the workshop. Appropriate referrals will be reviewed and additional resources will be provided.

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand pelvic floor dysfunction and outline basic definitions, anatomy, and physiology.
  2. Describe the impact of pelvic floor dysfunction on the individual and the contribution of occupational therapy.
  3. Identify basic strategies, other services, and resources for clinicians.
