More than 50% of mental and behavioural health concerns that occur in adults begin throughout childhood or adolescence (McMillan et al., 2020). Occupational therapists should consider how this impacts families as parents and caregivers experience high levels of depression, stress, and uncertainty when their child is experiencing mental and behavioural health needs (Leitch et al., 2019).

During this webinar, the key components of occupational therapy's role in parenting competency with children with mental and behavioural health needs will be described. The topics of parental needs and stress when parenting a child with a behavioural health needs will be explored, along with the impact of those unmet needs on parent self-efficacy and the family unit. Using parents as experts on their children and the family unit will be described through focus groups. 

After taking part in this webinar, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify the key components of occupational therapy's role in parenting competency with children with mental and behavioural health needs.
  2. Define strategies to meet needs of families to supports their child(ren)'s participation in daily occupations.
  3. Self-assess current strategies used to support families.
